If you are living in the Atlanta, GA area you’ll be ecstatic to know that about the American Craft Show that happens every year at around March. Normally held at the Cobb Galleria Centre, you’ll be able to see all sorts of crafted pieces and artworks that will be a pleasure to you and your friends. You may even find some jewelry pieces that will be the delight of your wife.
I try to go to these craft shows whenever I can, as I am an advocate of such events. This year, you will be able to see crafted items that make use of recycled materials. While I am more inclined towards the traditional crafts myself, I still feel that these are worth looking at.
Let’s take the example of jewelry that I made earlier. To me, jewelry is only wearable when made from some sort of “jewelry” caliber material. I don’t plan on giving my wife some materials made from twigs and discarded building materials. It may work on sculptures, perhaps; but to me, there’s a difference between art and street wear.
I will note, however, that there is one exception to my metal and gemstone rule. The trinkets found at Alexandra Bitner’s lucite jewelry are just fantastic and very wearable. It is very hard to design something fashionable out of what many would consider to be trash, but Bitner manages to do that quite well.
If the concept of recycled jewelry appeals to you, or you simply want to do your part for the environment, then go to the American Craft Show held every year. And it’s not just jewelry, to be fair; other works of art are made from such materials. It’s not my thing, but to each his own. And if you’ve missed the American Craft Show, don’t worry; there are other craft shows out there that you could attend year round.
Mead is an alcoholic beverage that is derived from a mixture of water and honey, fermented and left to develop using yeast. The content may rise from that of slightly alcoholic, to one that could knock out a heavy drinker. More often than not, it is confused with the name ‘honey wine’ but it is still mead. Quite really, it is still just water and honey for the more no-nonsense folks out there.
A classification of mead that has herbs and spices (common favorites are ginger, vanilla, clove, cinnamon, nutmeg, oregano and even lavender) is called metheglin. Metheglin comes from the word “meddyglyn” which roughly means ‘healing liquor’ suggesting to its earlier use as a type of therapeutic or immediate drug.
Nowadays, metheglin is commercialized, produced, and sold in bottles across the state, more for its taste and appeal rather than its medicinal effects (if it did have any). Spicing and the combination of amount and type is key. As of this time, there are at least a hundred different types of metheglin, a handful being popular, and some bordering on the exotic or esoteric.
Metheglin makes for good business, especially in parts of Texas who still have the appetite for this pioneer drink. It’s simple, and not complicated like beer or most of the modern wines that we have. The health bit is a bonus; it’s the taste that matters. After all, we’ve been smoking and drinking with disregard for our health. Well, metheglin may actually be good for your body. Moderation, again, is key to this however. After all, too much of a good thing would still bring illness to you.
To make metheglin, mix rational parts of water and honey, bring to a boil, and mix in your herbs or flowers/spices and yeast. Allow to ferment for a week in an airtight container. Drain out and strain for impurities and ferment once more. Let it reach at least a year for good and sweet taste that’s deep, like the history of mead.
The city of Macon is aptly named as the Cherry Blossom Capital of the World with good reason. The streets are filled with the numerous blossoms, all from the trees in the sidewalk. The place reminds you of a modern Japanese-American themed city, as the usual-Japanese flowers float amongst modern American buildings and asphalt-lined streets.
The streets are bustling and filled with Yoshino cherry trees, and every Spring, they fill the air and the ground with their pale pink petals. It is a very extravagant display of color, which leaves their audience speechless and breathless for the first time.
History relates that the cherry trees came from the late William A. Fickling, Sr. who was a local realtor in the area. He had discovered a Yoshino tree in Macon, and with confirmation after three years, had found out what the species was. Took him a trip to Washington DC just to find out the tree was actually a Yoshino specie!
His generosity and enthusiasm had urged the residents to participate in his vision of filling the whole city with the pretty cherry trees. Years passed and the vision had started to materialize. A lot of its current residents had moved to Macon just to be near the trees. One of them being Carolyn Clayton, the festival founder herself, who had fallen in love with the trees after she had visited.
She had urged Fickling to go with their project, and the dream became true. Through a big community effort, 500 trees were planted along the streets across Macon. The project was encouraged when they had finally proposed the first Cherry Blossom Festival.
Soon it had become one of the Top 20 events of the South, and its fame spread. From three days, it had reached 10 days of festivities. The trees keep growing too, and like their number, the dreams of Mr. Fickling will live on and grow more and more.
This past weekend, I’ve had the great pleasure to work with the 35th Representative District Democratic Committee over at the Apple-Scrapple Festival in Bridgeville. There were a large group of volunteers that were hard at work; together with them, we handed out campaign stickers and apples, balloons and Delaware yard signs. The demand for the latter was so high, that we could barely put them together to meet demand!
The event was a great success, all things considered. The weather thankfully cooperated with us, and the scrapple sandwiches and apple dumplings were scrumptious. The crowd was in the 50,000 numbers, according to the organizers. But for me, what was important is that we, the democrats, were the life of the party (in a manner of speaking). It was as if everybody looked for our wares at the craft show.
Speaking of craft shows, many Americans had the chance to show off their artistic talent at the Apple-Scrapple Festival. Anyone can appreciate the work of master craftspeople, but one particular talent caught my attention. There was a young boy, barely even a teenager, who displayed a wide array of miniature sculptures with amazing detail. According to his proud father, the boy sculpted and painted most pieces without his help. It is these bright futures that make me proud of what our nation has to offer in the future.
Various community gatherings like the Apple-Scrapple that remind me how wonderful it is to be a resident of the First State – your neighbors are your friends and your friends are your family. You just have to be such a close-knit community to be able to pull off a show like the Apple-Scrapple 17 years in a row! It has been a pleasure to share these moments with the people of Bridgeville.
If you are in the mood for some good old community gatherings like the Apple-Scrapple Festival, all you have to do is look for the right craft show near your area. Find craft show listings in your area today on the Internet!
The Cherry Creek Arts Festival (CCAF) is a weekly event that is a combination of visual, culinary and performing arts. Get ready for this event as every year, 350,000 people gather and attend during the three days that it takes place. There is no admission fee, and the event gives its patrons the opportunity to meet and greet a lot of different international artists. They can also try fine dining, visit craft exhibits, view artist demonstrations, and just have fun with their families with interactive and stimulating performing arts.
Colorado considers CCAF as the signature cultural event in the area; the annual craft show is highly ranked and has received awards. It would be a fine idea to consider joining the show if you are a student of the arts. CCAF has a special event for you, whether you’re a visual artist or specializing in a certain type of craft.
The CCAF is a non-profit corporation, and our mission is simply to provide access to a broad array of arts experiences and support arts education in Colorado. Besides the festival itself, CCAF manages its yearlong art education and outreach mission through other programs including the Mobile Art Collection, artist in Residence programs, and the Student Art Buying Program.
So when will the arts festival take place? CCAF traditionally place on the 4th of July weekend. This year, the annual event will take place from the third to the fifth of the said month. The event will start at 10am, and it will continue on until 6pm before the festival nights kick in. There will be no festival night on the 5th, however.
Where would this arts festival happen? The CCAF will take place in the Cherry Creek North District on all six streets that are between Clayton and Steele. There are about 230 juried visual artists every year; maybe if you think you have significant arts and crafts skills, you can try out and be part of this elite team.
It is heartwarming to know that there are organizations focused to give support to our elderly. In countries like the Philippines, they have strong family ties which make them care for their grandparents, parents or old family members until old age. There are a few Senior Nursing Homes in the Philippines and Filipinos are actually proud of that fact. It just goes to show that they are bound to reciprocate the love, care and attention that their parents gave them when they were little.
At Medora, there is a “Seniors Day Every Tuesday” movement which is a weekly event that caters to Senior members various activities. In here there are several activities such as fitness regimens, moral and spiritual team building support, fun and active games, Senior socialization and field trips. You may invite your parents or grandparents to attend this event and bond with fellow Senior members.
Come to think of it. Being a Senior should not stop anyone from enjoying life and having fun. Life does not stop when you reach 60, heck they even said that it begins at 40. A research once concluded that older people are much happier than young ones. Apart from all of this the bottom line still remains that old people should be treated with love, respect and care.
for the fitness regimen, it includes yoga classes and active sex therapy for elderly couples. The aim of this activity is to enrich the sex life of aging couples. The moral and spiritual team building support proved to be the most favorite event of all, because in here Seniors get to relate interpersonally with their peers. They get to share their life experiences and lessons to others.
Don’t just think that being a Senior will leave you playing cheese or knitting quilts for the rest of your life! There are many more things to do. Life goes on and fun doesn’t stop while you’re still alive.
Handmade crafts are becoming more popular as days pass because of its unusual charm and beauty. Handmade crafts are special pieces of items because they are created with care and devotion by the crafter. Hand made crafts are usually cheap because raw materials that are used for these are safe and economical. Some people say that handmade crafts are done by housewives or hands-on moms who want to earn income at home. They are simple people who were able to turn their hobbies to money making opportunities.
Crafting as a business is a no-brainer for people born with natural talent. Creativity comes naturally and well, it runs in her blood. A good business sense and knowledge on cash flow and general accounting should be present if you want your business to succeed. This means that creativity and great ideas alone could not make your business thrive. Try to attend seminars and financial workshops that would make you learn more about money and how it works.
There are lots of ideas for hand made stuffs that are very easy and fun to do. One can make home made candles, soaps, detergents, toys, baby diapers, baby wipes, etc. To make a home made baby wipes is so easy and will take very simple and affordable ingredients. Handcrafted wooden toys are popular in crafts fairs and mothers actually buy them because of their charming appeal. They are unlike factory manufactured toys because each piece is lovingly created by ones own hand. Wooden toys are done by carving a very pliable piece of wood and painting it using acrylic or water based paints. Topping it off with a glaze or varnish will give it a glossy and finished effect.
It is time to check out your local neighborhood crafts fair listings now to get a glimpse of crafts fairs schedules.
I have never seen a bull riding sport up close but am definitely eager to witness one at the forthcoming Fremont Bull Riding Classics in Nebraska. I have often see bull riding on the television and I can say that it always give me the chills to see these bull riders bodies literally being swayed by the bulls harsh and quick movements. Bull riding is considered extreme sport where only professionals and skilled riders are allowed to participate.
In bull riding, both the bull and the rider are given scores. The total of the two scores usually sum up the score for the whole competition. The participant with the highest score wins the event. Bulls are scored based on their agility, speed and bucking style. Bucking is what you call the galloping of the bull in its hind legs to throw off the rider.
As part of the given rules in any bull riding competition, a rider should not touch himself, the rope, or the bull with his other hand. The rope is always coated with rosin, as well as the riders glove to prevent it from slipping. As safety measures, all riders are encouraged to come in the usual bull riding outfits. Apart from the gloves riders are expected to wear chaps as protective clothing for his legs and vest for his chest.
There had been some moral debate on the issue of bull riding and some of it arose from animal welfare organizations. They are against the use of hot shots or electric cattle prods which are used to ensure that bulls will run out once released from the chute. Supporters however claim that shots were of minimal dose and do not affect overall well-being of the animals since they possess thick hides.
I should definitely go and watch this bull riding competition. Competitions like this amuse me as the skill of both the rider and the bull are very much witnessed by many.
Americans prefer their stuff huge and extra large, from the size of their burgers and fries to big cars and houses. We also have the largest egos, as some countries like to say, and I believe there is some truth to this statement. And why shouldn’t we be proud? We like big things, and we get big things.
When one talks about big things, one will always get a visual image of Texas and Texans, where “bigger” is a way of life. This state has one of the largest areas of land in the United States, and they’re also bigwigs in livestock production. But Texas isn’t just any old stretch of farmland, either. There is also a very large growth of economy here and we’re proud of the technological advancements we have made.
This large state is a cultural giant as well. While we are traditionally known as a blend Southwestern and Southern culture, we have been a melting pot of various cultures over the years. This is no doubt because of our economic growth; many people want to live here in Texas. More importantly, however, this mix of cultures has given rise to some of the most varied craft fairs.
Even with fairs, Texas likes to make things bigger. And instead of having different fairs for different cultures, Texas events are a spectacle of shows and crafts that will satiate a giant’s cultural longing. Whether it’s Native American, Mexican, or Asian themed crafts, you will find it here and then some. Look for these craft fairs online, and then visit it to truly see the grand scale of Texas Shows.
Or even better, you can even contribute to these grand affairs by registering for a booth of your own. If you are proud of your cultural heritage and would like to share your fondness of it, plus you have talent, it’s an excellent idea to attend these fairs. Check for events now and be part of the Texas Craft Fair spectacle!
Flea Market is a place where you can find almost anything. A beat-up old chair could have new life and meaning by giving it a fresh coat of paint. Funky and chic wall paper can be wrapped on a piece of wood purchased from a flea market that should add character to a bedroom when used as a headboard. Add flair and change the look of an old armoire by exchanging the knobs to hand painted wooden knobs.
An old piece of door can serve as a charming decorative piece in a living room, simply coat with another layer of fresh paint or in this case wood stain. The door can be an excellent conversational piece and a good focal point when it is simply leaned on a living room wall. The natural wood color from the stain can blend well to the Asian theme youve been planning for your home. Accent with wicker furniture, lamps and other small accessories from the flea market and you can have a redecorated room with fewer expenses.
Spring can make a good concept for your bedroom. Pretty floral fabrics from flea market that had otherwise been labeled as outdated can make a charming comeback in your bed sheets. Accent it with a small reading chair upholstered with gauzy floral fabric and citrus colored pillows. Adorn your night table with fresh spring time flowers and crisp white translucent curtains for your windows. What a refreshing room to wake up with indeed!
