How Effective is Home Schooling?

Posted By Joseph N. Abraham, M.D. on December 20, 2008 @ 5:36 am

There is more and more discussion of home schooling. This should come as no surprise; it is at home that we learn most of what we know; and the best students have received their educational foundations at home. The strength of this approach is demonstrated by the rapid progress of many home-schooled children, even though they often spend much less time with textbooks than their peers.

Societies, unfortunately, have found it necessary to generate educational systems in order to address three situations: those in which parents do not have the necessary knowledge to educate their children; those in which they haven’t the time; and those in which they haven’t the interest.

In these three situations, it is in a society’s best interests to provide education for those children. And this appears to be a prudent decision for those societies who do so: there is a strong correlation between every desirable attribute of a citizen and a community, and institutional education. As one group put it succinctly, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance.”

Few parents have all three requirements. And even those who do, almost always need some help. Few among us have mastery of visual and acoustic arts, mathematics, language, social studies, etc., that we can teach a child all the way through the high school requirements.

And for the handful of people who can do it all, everyone has limits: who has the mastery to educate a child through all the necessary college courses?

Should home schooling be the ultimate target of our educational systems? Should we begin designing a community wherein one parent stays at home, not so much as to cook, clean, and do housework, as to home-school future generations? Whereas the current trend is for educational systems to intervene earlier and earlier in our children’s education, perhaps as we become better educated, we should instead encourage parents to take over more of their children’s early education. Perhaps in some future day, we will have a situation in which the majority of our parents have the knowledge, time, and interest to educate their children all the way to adulthood.

So home-schooling is very attractive, and perhaps one day will be universal. But for the near future, brick-and-mortar schools are still necessary for most children.

The Simple Truth About Simple Budget Keeping

Posted By Alix Montoya on December 19, 2008 @ 11:04 pm

Have you ever experienced an emergency that drained virtually all the savings you have? It could either be an accident which somehow was not covered by your insurance, or a sickness that was just too expensive. God forbid that these things should ever happen to you, but we still need to be prepared for these kinds of situations just in case.

Most people often think of budgets as a way to allocate money to a certain aspect of their lifestyle. However, the importance of budgets can be extended to cover something more than just the mortgage or your kids’ allowance. Saving money for a rainy day can also be attributed to proper budget procedures.

Planning for something in advance is a good way to prepare for anything that might come up. You don’t have to be specific about what your saving should be for, you just have to know what it could be for. There is a major difference between being prepared and being just plain paranoid. You need to learn what this difference is.

One good way to look ahead is to save up a fraction of your income and put up an emergency fund. You can set aside a fourth of your annual earnings and then just leave it there so it can grow and be more useful in the future. You can use it for big purchases like a new house or a new car, or you can use it for a family vacation if you are very confident.

You are also going to want to save up to three months’ worth of mortgage, bills and other expenses. In case of a huge financial disaster, you are at least giving your family enough time to recover.

It is always best to have a Plan B when you’re in a pickle. So whatever strategy you have in keeping budget, you need to be sure that it covers everything possible. It’s just always best to be prepared for anything.

So it’s very important that we are prepared for anything that it might bring along with it. And teaching our kids to appreciate money is one way to make the financial crisis a good family bonding experience.

One of the many things that we can suggest to them is to save up their allowance. You can teach them that if they put aside a certain amount everyday or even every week they can be able to buy things that they wouldn’t normally have any money for. This also teaches them great discipline and better use of money. If you child is so inclined, you can also teach him or her to save up for his or her future by setting up a college fund.

Saving up money also lets them buy bigger things. Show your kids that if they save up their allowance, just even once a week, they would be able to buy things like the newest videogame or even something that they have been wanting to have for the longest time. This way they’ll get to see the buying power money has and you can teach them how to shop like a smart consumer.

Another thing you can suggest to your child is to keep a budget. You are definitely never too young to learn how to spend you money wisely and a budget allows you to do exactly that. So teach you kid how to set aside for the things that he or she needs and then you can be amazed at how easily this lets your child prepare for the future.

One good idea is to let them make some money on their own. If they are old enough, they can probably do simple jobs for the household or for the neighborhood. You can let them take up a paper distribution job or lawn mowing job every weekend. You can also suggest them to join in on crafting trade fairs and showcase their handiwork. If you’re a hobbyist yourself, you can share the moment with your child.

There are a lot of things that we want our child to be and one of those things is to grow up as responsible adults who contribute to society. The good news is, you can actually start now while still learning to ride a bike.

Ensuring Your Application Under the Pennsylvania Adoption Law

Posted By Anthony Galz on December 18, 2008 @ 6:22 pm

As with any adoption in any state, Pennsylvania adoption law can be a very long process. If you are to have a smooth adoption process, it is always best to learn how to id in the right manner. Use the Pennsylvania adoption law as your guide for your adoption application.

The first thing to do is to know is which agency you is ideal for making your application. Under the Pennsylvania adoption law, public and private adoption agencies are and licensed by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare (DPW). These agencies are authorized, in various capacities, to help in the facilitation of the placement of an adoptive child into a permanent. Learning about how these agencies work is another important key to your application.

There are three licenses that may be issued to adoption agencies under the Pennsylvania adoption law. These three licenses are:

- The Full Service License – DPW issues this license both to private and public adoption agencies and gives them the authority to assume care and custody of an adoptive child. Asides this, a full-service adoption agency may also provide other services like placing a child up for adoption, initiating the evaluation of prospective adoptive parents; and supervising the placement of an adoptive child into a new permanent home.

With a full service Texas adoption, the agency has the authority under the Pennsylvani law to recall a child from an unhealthy and unsuitable adoptive home environment, and proceed with steps to relocate him or her to a better and more caring permanent home.

- Non-custodial License Agency- This license allows certain adoption agencies to work hand in hand with public or private full service agencies by specializing in certain areas of the adoption process. They may act as intermediaries between a full service agency and the birth parents, the adoptive parents and the agency, as well as between both the birth and adoptive parents.

Non-custodial adoption agencies also assist in the adoptive placement process. They offer follow-up and support services as well, especially after the child has been placed into their permanent homes. Certain services, under Pennsylvania adoption law, are our of non-custodial licensed-adoption agencies. They may not remove a child from an unsuitable home environment, nor are they authorized to assume the care and custody of a child, as well as initiate adoptive placement processes.

- The Inter-country License – This license is issued by DPW as an additional suite of services under the Pennsylvania adoption law. The inter-country license allows these agencies to initiate final adoption proceedings that would allow placement of foreign-born children into permanent domestic homes. If you are interested in adopting a child from Asian countries such as Korea, China, or the Philippines, you may only do so with a private agency, because under Pennsylvania adoption law, these are the only agencies that may provide these services.

Make sure you go for adoption agency authorized and licensed under Pennsylvania adoption law. It ensures that you have not overstepped your own boundaries, and that your future son or daughter’s welfare has been taken cared of before they are placed with you.

Bakugan Battle Arena is highly recommended

Posted By Ross Taylor on @ 4:49 am

If you were to ask any kid between 6 and 12 about the Bakugan Battle Arena Mega pack, they could likely be able tell you all about it. Bakugan toys have captured the attention of children worldwide. Bakugan was released first in Japan, and purchased rapidly by players both young and old.

It was promoted in Canada next, and is now available in the United States. If you were to do a search on the internet, you would find that leagues are forming in preparation for tournaments. The trading of the various figures is becoming popular, even among young adults.

This strategic game has players use various Bakugan warriors to battle each other for points. These warriors include Juggernoids, Robatallians, and Fear Rippers. Players can pretend to be their favorite character from the show, and as they play, they gain a better understanding of the character, as well as the cards.

The series made its first US appearance earlier this year on Cartoon Network and immediately captured the attention and imagination of millions of viewers. The series is similar in style and concept to previous Japanese hits such as Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh. Bolstered by the popularity of “Bakugan Battle Brawlers” the Bakugan Battle Pack, and all of the accessories , are guaranteed to be on many kids’ Christmas wish lists this year.

The Bakugan Battle Arena is an important part of the staging for this adventure and role playing game. The players of this game are going to decide the fate of the galaxy, and they do this by pitting a variety of warriors, known as Bakugan, against each other for points. Players assume the roles of characters in the series, and many will choose to play Dan, the heroic 12 year old. Points are scored by rolling or launching their marble-shaped Bakugan onto magnetic cards.

If these land on the cards, the spring-loaded marbles burst open and transform instantly into battling warriors. Players must rely on strategy to place their cards in the arena in the best positions to give them an advantage. The card placement affects the outcome of each Bakugan battle. The players then must use their shooting skills to launch their Bakugan warriors into the brawl and begin the action. Can anyone say Mighty Marble Madness? Up to 4 players can stage battles in the Bakugan Battle Arena at any one time, which allows for a lot of ongoing action. The Battle Arena has a sturdy, black plastic base with red walls, which keep the mighty Bakugan warriors spinning into action instead of getting lost in battle.

For kids who are already Bakugan devotees, the Bakugan Battle Arena is a “must have”, and it is very easy to fit together. This accessory adds an extra dimension to the battles. Both the Bakugan Battle Arena and Bakugan Battle Brawlers made their debut at the American International Toy Fair in New York City and were immediately placed on the list of hottest 2008 toys.
