The invention and the history of the Dell computer is quite interesting. First of all, it was in 1984 when Michael Dell, a student at the University of Texas at Austin, created the company PC’s Limited. He only had a starting capital of $1,000. So what he did was he started working out of his dorm room to build personal computers made from stock components. These computers were to be IBM compatible because that was the standard at that time. If a computer were to function with various pieces of hardware, it needed to be IMB compatible since hardware and software programs were being designed to be IBM compatible.

It is when Michael Dell figured that selling computers directly to customers to determine customer need that he dropped out of college. His family then extended him the $300,000 in expansion capital that he needed to make his business take off.

A success

It was in 1985 that the Turbo PC was developed and it sold for less than $800. It contained an Intel 8088 processor that ran at 8 MHz, which is considerably slower than the computers that we use today. Computers today are running in gigahertz, which are hundreds and even thousands of times faster than the 8 MHz processor that Michael Dell was installing in his computers at the time. But the truth is that this was the best that could be done in 1985. The technology was developing.

But there was an aspect of PC’s Limited that was unique from the rest and continues to be this way today. It is the fact that customers could custom order their computers rather than buy a computer that was already assembled. This allowed individuals to receive computers at lower prices than what they could get with their competitors. This definitely worked because PC’s Limited grossed $73 million in its first year of trading.

The beginning of Dell

It was in 1988 that PC’s Limited became Dell. Prior to that, the company already had 11 international operations occurring, so the company was quite large. There were on site services set up to compensate for the lack of businesses acting as service centers for Dell computers. It was in 1990 that Dell attempted to sell through club houses, but had very little success with this. So it is then that Dell went right back to its direct to customer sales.

In 1996, Dell started selling computers on its website. An individual could go onto the website and custom design their computer so that it would be built to their specifications. From there, it would be shipped to the customer’s home. In addition to online shopping, Financing was made available so that individuals would be able to acquire their computers easily.

In 1999, Dell became the largest personal computer seller when they took over Compaq computers. Their revenue topped $25 billion in 2002. Also in 2002, Dell started selling televisions and other electronic items. They now have Dell brand printers, LCD TVs, and much more. Because of the expansion beyond computers, Dell was changed to Dell Inc. in 2003.

It is amazing that this billion dollar company started in a dorm room with $1000 in starting capital. Since introduction of ISO 14001 Standard for Environmental Management Systems the market has developed numerous practical models of Environmental Manuals for organizations with single sites. At the same time, formats for management system structures for multi-facility businesses are limited at best in technical publications. This paper discusses a model for structuring a top-level documentation that allows an organization with multiple sites to use common ISO 14001 Environmental Management System Manual. Discussed approach noticeably improves consistency of the organization’s Environmental policies.

As a professional EMS assessor with leading certification bodies, I audited many large multi-site enterprises that had problems with aligning their corporate ISO 14001 Environmental Manuals with the corresponding procedures issued by their locations. To fill this gap, some companies create Environmental Manuals for their locations as copies of the main Environmental Manual; other businesses develop location-specific Environmental Manuals that are completely independent form the home office Environmental Manual.

In practice, neither one of these approaches produce a consistent result. In the 1st instance when a modified Environmental Manual is used for a location, methods for updating local Environmental Manuals are not defined. This disconnect arises from the fact that the corporate office manuals are controlled by the home office, while local Environmental Manuals are facilities’ responsibility.

In the case of companies choosing their facilities to develop their own ISO 14001 Manuals, discrepancies in numerous Environmental Manuals result in visible differences between the home office and facilities’ Environmental Manuals and therefore commitments to environmental issues.

If an organization wishes to deliver a consistent message regarding its Environmental policies and their position on prevention of pollution, the deficiencies of discussed methods become obvious.

One of our large EMS customers demonstrated this point well. The corporate ISO 14001 Environmental Manual addressed majority of the requirements of the standard and referenced appropriate regulations. At the same time, one of their US locations did not define their Environmental policy, Mexico facility did not reference local legal requirements, yet their European site failed to document their Environmental programs all together!

As we can see, both approaches to creation of location’s ISO 14001 Environmental Manuals as copies of the corporate Manuals or independent Manuals do not appear to be practical. Besides, if a company has already spent time on developing an Environmental Manual, why should another employee in the same organization spent more time to create a similar or duplicate document?

Fortunately, there is a solution. Let’s review an example of ISO 14001 2008 Environmental Manual model that references supporting documents within the text of the Manual. For example, element 4.3.2, Legal and other requirements, may read: EMS Associates, LLP has established, implemented and maintains Legal Requirements Procedure to identify and have access to the applicable legal requirements related to the organization’s environmental aspects per the Environmental Aspects Procedure,

The same method will also work for a multi-site organization for those documents that are used at all locations. For example, such processes as Hazard Material Handling, Management Review, Non-Conformity Procedure and others may be the same for all locations and therefore be referenced in the Environmental Manual as shown above.

However, what if our locations need to use different environmental aspects, programs and other site-specific Environmental Management System processes? If we use the model above and want to keep a common ISO 14001 Environmental Manual, we have to reference in the Manual corresponding documents for all locations which may not be practical. Below we will explore how a corporate Environmental Manual can practically reference location-specific documents to support commitments of the company’s common ISO 14001 Environmental Manual.

The same document reference structure as for a single-location company that we discussed above, can be used if the number of locations is small, let’s say two or three. In this case, clause 4.3.1, Environmental aspects may read: Environmental Consultants Inc. has established, implemented and maintains Environmental Aspect Procedure to identify the environmental aspects of its activities, products and services and Significant Environmental Aspect Matrix HO and Significant Environmental Aspect Matrix WA to determine and document those aspects that have or can have significant impacts on the environment. This example shows references to the common Environmental Aspect Procedure and site-specific Significant Environmental Aspect Matrixes for the Home Office (HO) and the Washington (WA) locations. While this model works well for a limited number of facilities, it becomes impractical when the number of locations is significant.

If we need to work with a company that has significant number or offices and wishes to reference in the Environmental Manual procedures controlled by its sites, we may take a different approach. For example, we can prepare a matrix to associate the corporate Environmental Manual clauses with the site-specific procedures. We can name this tool Manual Reference Matrix and consider the following reference model:

While Barry Bonds is known as an incredible baseball player, it is other things about him which may eventually be what he is remembered for. Bonds won four MVP awards as an outfielder, four years in a row. He played in the 2007 World Series and is one of the most widely known players in the sport. In 2006, he surpassed even Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron in home runs.

Sadly, there may be an asterisk next to all of these records. Bonds has admitted to steroid usage (although he denies having willingly or knowingly taken the drug), something which was long rumored. Bonds did not exactly have a rapport with the fans, despite his performance on the diamond. Many hated him and he gladly returned the favor. Bonds burned so many bridges that no team was willing to sign him on for the 2008 season (and he has no contracts lined up for the 2009 season at the time of this writing), despite his holding the record for career home runs at 762 and most home runs in a single season at 73.

Having already broken many records and his financial future in no doubt, Bonds was investigated in relation to his steroid use as part of the Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative case and has been charged with perjury and obstruction of justice for lying about his use of steroids.

This has cast a pall over his entire career. Fans questioned the validity of his MVP awards and his achievements within the game – and the league itself has also expressed concern. Achievements which came through the use of steroids, the reasoning goes, are not to be valued as highly as those accomplished solely through an athlete’s natural faculties.

A pall has been thrown over a career in baseball which began in high school, when Bonds was courted by the Giants while still a senior. He did not end up signing on with the Giants, choosing to pursue a college education. Bonds played in college as well, where in a single year he scored seven hits in a row in the College World Series and was picked as All American selection of the year by the publication Sporting News.

Bonds will have his day in court for obstruction of justice charges stemming from the BALCO investigation in March of this year. Bonds still argues that he never knowingly took steroids, but how the case will play out in the courts remains to be seen.

Some cancer patients have been cured from their illness totally while others have diminished tumor sizes. Vitamin B17 is a promising anticancer supplement however the dangerous symptoms attached to it still leaves the public skeptical about the product.
