Shower curtains are a big focal point in your bathroom. When you enter the room, they are often the largest surface area you see so you really want to make them stand out and enhance your bathroom.

You may find ready made shower curtains which are suitable for your bathroom among the many available these days. But if you can’t find exactly what you are looking for, consider making your own to get something perfect for your style and your bathroom.

Making shower curtains really only involves cutting and sewing straight lines so even if you are a beginner you should be able to sew a shower curtain if you can’t find what you are looking for ready made.

Here are the steps required to design your own shower curtain:-

1. Select Your Fabric

Choose fabric which suits the mood and style of your bathroom as well as something you love. You are bound to find something among the wide range available. Your fabric should be washable (so that you can launder it regularly) but it doesn’t need to be waterproof as you can buy a ready made shower curtain liner to use inside the bath tub while your shower curtain stays dry on the outside.

2. Select a Heading

Headings for shower curtains should match the style of your bathroom. Simple ruffles are good for a country look, pleats for a classic style and eyelets for a contemporary, fun or funky bathroom.

3. Consider How to Embellish Your Curtain

Trimmings make your shower curtain special. Make sure they are washable so that you will still be able to launder your curtain easily. Contrasting borders (picking out one of the colors from a patterned fabric) are a great way of enhancing a curtain and you can often match up towels and other accessories with the border color. Other ideas for trimming include colored buttons, sequins, embroidery or braid. Take a look at the needlework or haberdashery section of a large department store for ideas.

4. Curtain Rings and Rods

Buy special shower curtain rings and a rod which are in keeping with your bathroom and shower curtain design. You can get a variety of styles from stores and online. Metal rings and rod go well with a classic design while a fun, funky look would be better with colored plastic rings and rod.
