Fireman Helmets serve many purposes. Each helmet no matter what brand you use is developed with specific features. These features enable to help keep firemen safe.
The first element or feature is the material that a fire helmet is made of. Most traditional fire helmets are made of fiberglass. Fiber glass is durable and very light which is a good thing since you do not want a lot of weight on your head. Remember, your neck holds the weight of your head and the neck is thinnest part of your body. Fiberglass gives some protection against falling debris and doesn’t absorb heat which helps when you are in a fire.
The second element or feature is the paint coating on the helmet. The paint used has fire durability and helps with keep the structure of the fire helmet. The most common colors are red and black. The red usually signifies the supervisor or captain’s rank. The black color is most used for the firefighter position. With low visibility a red color can help firemen see where the captain is.
The third element is the reflective stickers placed on the helmet. The reflective stickers are usually bright green or yellow. The stickers show the position of firemen in a house fire by a flashlight from inside or outside. Motorist can also see where firemen are on an accident scene in the middle of the night when the headlamps help light up the reflective stickers.
The fourth element or feature is the duck bill on the back of the helmet. Hot coals and debris can fall around firemen as they fight a fire. Before the duck bill design, hot debris and coals could shoot down the coat of the firemen. This situation would lead to severe burns to the necks and backs of firemen.
As you can see Firemen helmets have many features on them that help firemen fight fire. Without this piece of equipment firemen would have more problems to deal with while trying to save lives and fight fires.
