10 Tips For Saving Money This Holiday Season

Anyone can turn their financial life around by finding ways to save money. The most difficult action that’s required is for you to take that first step. Here are 10 tips for saving money this holiday season.

1. Instead of going to a movie theater or renting a DVD, go to the library.

Obtaining a library card takes only a few minutes, whether you do it online or in person. By presenting your library card, you can take out DVDs, keep them for a week, and pay nothing. Your friends and family will be happy, and you could save anywhere from $5 to $25.

2. Plan your menu for the week based on the coupons and low-priced items offered through the grocery store flyers.

Yes, it’s very tempting to watch the Food Network show, and then go to your computer to print out that awesome recipe with a boatload of ingredients that you don’t have in your pantry. The trick to saving lots of money on your grocery bill is to buy what’s on sale that week. Build your meals around the meats, poultry, or fish that have the lowest prices. The same is true for veggies. Why buy an avocado for $1.25 when you can buy a head of lettuce for less than one dollar and feed your family for two or three meals?

3. Put your TV, cable box, DVD player, speakers, and stereo system on a power strip.

A quick way to save money is to flip the switch to “off,” on your power strip for those electronics that you’re not using. You will save money on your electric bill, and maybe your electronics will even last longer. If you get in the habit of turning off the switch before you go to bed, you will save eight hours of power; even more if you go to work and don’t watch TV until the next evening; you might save twelve or eighteen hours of electricity usage.

4. Offer your services rather than spending money on a gift.

Each of us can delight our friends and family by creating a simple gift card with colored paper, and writing a note inside that offers a unique service. If you have a friend who’s a writer, you could offer to create a blog for her. For new parents, you can give a gift of free babysitting for a specific number of nights. You can offer to cook dinner for someone, where they provide the ingredients, and you prepare and serve the food. You can volunteer your time to do their grocery shopping, or to trim their Christmas tree. Whatever service you provide will be received with a warm welcome since it will save them time and money. Plus, you will save money by not having to purchase a gift.

5. Look for free community events that you and your family can attend, and make a date to get together. You’ll save money, since you don’t need to spend money to experience fun outings.

You might be amazed at the long list of activities scheduled in your town that will help fill your calendar with no-cost and fun things to do this holiday season. You can check with your local library, your city hall, or you can go online and search for events in your community. You’ll find free food events, local music, plays, and fun entertainment.

6. Buy alternative beauty and hygiene products for cheap, rather than spending forty dollars on a facial scrub or five dollars on shaving cream.

Did you know that using a hair conditioning product works as good if not better than expensive shaving gels? You will also discover lower-priced beauty products that work better than the higher-priced brands. Just make sure the products you buy contain essential vitamins like A and E.

7. Cancel those cable or satellite movie channels that you hardly ever watch.

With over 500 on-demand movie channels available for free, you could save money every month by watching the free movies rather than spending your cash on the paid channels.

8. When you’re signing up for a service, make sure you ask the company rep to waive their set-up fees.

This is probably a little-known fact, but every time I ask a company to waive a set-up fee or an installation fee, they’ve done it. In these money-conscious times, companies know you have choices of shopping somewhere else. Unless you ask, you don’t receive.

9. Inquire if your company offers extra benefits or discounts that you’re entitled to receive that you might not know about.

If you’re working a full-time or part-time job, ask your company’s human resource department if they offer any programs or discounts that you might be able to use. Some companies have a list of stores that will honor a discount if you just mention the company’s name where you work.

10. Create a list of things you can do in your household that will save you money.

The hardest part about saving money is changing your normal spending routines. Make a list of things you can sell, or ways that you can cut back on expenses. Then set up a timeline indicating when you’ll schedule and complete each task. You’ll be surprised how much money you can save this holiday season by making a list and then implementing your ideas.
