How Do I Make My Kid Get Ready For School?

Posted By http://www.mychildcanbehave.com on October 31, 2008 @ 11:28 am

Am I the only one in the world that has issues getting my kids ready for school in the mornings? Sometimes it seems to be an endless battle. I know that the dynamics in each family are different according to how many kids verses how many parents. But I thought I would share my ideas in the chance that they might help some parents.

There has been an ongoing issue with my daughter regarding getting out the door to school on time each morning. Even when I wake her up very early she still seems to muck around every morning. she is regularly late for school by a few minutes and this is a source of frustration for me.

The first thing you should do with a child reluctant to get out the door to school is to talk to them about what happens at school. Are they being bullied? Is there a reason that they don’t want to go to school ? Once you have eliminated anything there, then you will need to come up with a plan of attack for how to turn this problem around.

It is important to find a positive way to deal with the problem if at all possible. Perhaps a sticker chart or something that they can get every day to start off with, depending on the age of the child. But early on the rewards should be pretty immediate. Then as the child catches on the rewards can be a bit further apart.

You need to exhaust all the possibilities of positive consequences before thinking of turning to a negative consequence as positive consequences really do work better. Unfortunately for my daughter I had to use a negative consequence this morning, on account of her throwing a tantrum. That was something I would not have expected to see from a ten year old.

Becky has left for school now, about ten minutes late, and I am left to decide what consequence will help her to learn a lesson. Remember that a consequence should be given in order to help a child learn that it is simply not worth it. I am thinking of removing a few things from her room to go up into my top cupboard: some rather grown up earrings that Beck should not be wearing if she is still throwing tantrums plus a few grown up items of clothing more suitable for an older, more mature child.

It is important to make the crime match the punishment as closely as possible. I don’t know if I have got it exactly right today. But I figure that if a child of mine is still throwing a tantrum at age ten, perhaps she should not be wearing grown up clothes.

Even though this may seem harsh, I will give Becky a chance to lessen her consequence very quickly. Our job as parents is to help prepare our kids for the outside world when they grow up. Even convicts in jail have the chance to lessen their time behind bars for good behavior. So our kids should also be provided with this opportunity to lessen a consequence wherever possible. If Becky does the right thing for perhaps two days, she will get her earrings back and so on until she has earned everything back again. This way she fully understands that she is responsible for making things happen in her life. And that’s the way I want it to be.

Teen Dating: Be on Top of the Parents-Kid Dynamic

Posted By James Cavalier on @ 11:10 am

The idea of your teen dating can strike fear into the hearts of the parents in question. You’ve been around the block and know that things can go wrong in the dating scene. After all, you were once a teenager!

What kind of memories do the first dates bring to you? Was it bad, with a partner turning to be a jerk? Was it good, with all that is good in a day, stomach butterflies included? No matter how your personal answers are, you still need to make time to prepare your teenage kid for the first date.

There will be ups and downs, and your job as a parent is to be there for your teen and guide them in this new interaction with their peers.

There is not enough emphasis that must be put on the atmosphere at home. If you and your spouse are always in the middle of a quarrel, if the members of your family do not have a habit of respecting each other and if any argument seems like a war declaration, then, do not expect your kid to react otherwise. So, the best preparation for teen dating is a calm and warm atmosphere at home. Give a little room for compromise, let the others show how they feel, listen to them, and teach them how to listen to you, and your teenager will be a confident youngster.

Do not barge in your teenager’s feelings. Try to find more about them, when it comes to teenage dating, but don’t make them feel like they are being grilled by FBI. Here is how you should act when they tell you they are going on their first date.

Encourage double dates or group activities for starters. This makes it easier for your child to get into the swing of teen dating. A double date at the county fair allows both girls and boys to be more relaxed with one another and just have fun. Both boys and girls have someone of their own gender to chat with if self-conscious or nervous feelings surface. A group of boys and girls going bowling or to the skating rink is another good choice. It will help them build confidence in teen dating.

It is not working if you cannot help being intrusive. Let them have their privacy and don’t pester them with all kinds of advices and hard words. It is easier for them to gain confidence on their own than without you being on their shoulder all the time. Accept that they will not be talkative anytime you want to, but they will turn to you when needed.

Being non intrusive does not mean that you should let everything blowing in the wind. Try to approach your child with care, don’t scare them away and start up a conversation about teen dating and the aspects involved with it. Let them know that alcohol and drugs will get them into trouble and teach them how to stay away from them. Assure them that they can call you and ask for your help whenever something like this happens, without them feeling scared that they will get a severe punishment when they get home with you.

Put your best foot forward in guiding your teen, and chances are their teen dating experiences will be happy ones.

The Best Car GPS Buying Tips

Posted By Kaye Fretz on @ 11:10 am

Now, car owners need not trouble themselves with asking for directions or going through the hassle of paper maps. If you have a car, then you should consider getting a car GPS. This is the perfect device for you. There are however so many different devices to choose from. If you want one that is just perfect for you then you need to pick one carefully. Here are some GPS shopping tips.

Find Out Your Needs and Preferences

GPS devices are made to provide you with directional information. Different devices however tend to do so in different ways. If you predict that you will mostly be using your unit in your car, then you could opt for a car mounted GPS.

Car GPS Needs – Some people however may need GPS devices that can be used both in cars and out of cars. In this case, a portable device would be perfect. If you have your own palm top, you can also decide to get a flash or Bluetooth receiver instead.

Check the Features

GPS Features – GPS devices can have limited or a lot of features. You would have to get the unit with features that you can actually use and appreciate. Among the first features you should check are those for navigation.

User Customized Instructions – Aside from the usual maps, you might also be interested in such features as user customized instructions, voice instructions, map storage capacity and instant map updates. Other additional features may include movie player, MP3 player, backlight and heavy duty rechargeable batteries.

Test Ease of Use

Not every car GPS device is easy to manipulate or understand. Take the time to actually test a unit and find out if it is something you can be comfortable with. Of course, first time users may find it a challenge at first. There are some units though which you naturally feel incapable of operating. Usually, the portable units are less easy to manage than mounted ones. The compact features of portable devices simply make it difficult for manufacturers to incorporate user friendly features.

Compare as Many Models as Possible

Because of the number of GPS devices available, it’s simply impossible for one shop to carry all. You should however, take pains not to get stuck with a unit simply because there are no other units on display. A GPS system is a major purchase so make sure you take a good look around before settling for a device. One great way to compare unit features and prices is to look online. The internet is likely to hold nearly every imaginable model.

A car GPS is truly worth buying. You never have to get lost again with the right GPS unit in your car.

What Does a Smartphone Do?

Posted By Maddie Thompson on @ 11:07 am

Cell phones have become more than just phones. Now you can buy smartphones, which are still cellular phones, but with many more available features. It seems like just a few short years ago cell phones were big, bulky, and not so user friendly. Not only have they streamlined the physical aspects, but with smartphone technology you can send text messages, check your email, take and send pictures, and even surf the web right from your cell phone. And that’s not all they can do. More and more models have GPS navigation built right in.

Smartphones are for more than just calling and texting. They take the most popular features of a PDA and combine them with the calling technology to help you keep you organized and on top of everything. You have complete multiple field address books, calculators, calendars and schedule reminders, and yes, there are still games included on a lot of smartphone models. You don’t want to be without those important boredom breakers.

One thing that has proven to be very handy that smartphones have is a camera. People are now able to snap pictures (some even take video) during moments of life that they would not normally have had a camera with them. So we are catching snapshots of life we didn’t used to see.

Style is not neglected when it comes to smartphones either. Some models have hidden keyboards that flip or slide open. Others have touch screens with a stylus (plastic pen or pointer) to help key out what you need on the screen. Having a QWERTY keyboard on your smartphone makes text messaging and web browsing fast and easy.

So, a smartphone is definitely more than just a phone. Now you’re carrying your cellular phone, your PDA, your GPS navigator, your address book, your dayplanner, your video camera, and your point and shoot camera all in one small package with a full keyboard. In today’s digital age it’s good to be able to condense all these gizmos and gadgets into one handy little super gadget to get things done efficiently with.

3 Super Hot Weight Loss Tips

Posted By Sandy Jameson on @ 10:44 am

Your body wants you to lose weight, and you can, even if you could never lose weight before.

No. 1 Drink More Water

Your body is made up of 66% water, which means that it needs quite a bit of water on a daily basis. Most people don’t drink enough water to sustain optimum body function.

Drinking up to 8 glasses of water throughout the day will actually help you lose weight. The water makes you feel full, refreshes you and helps to keep your body flush out toxins and waste. Not only will this make you feel better, drinking plenty of water will keep your metabolism running higher, too.

You can lose a few pounds almost immediately by drinking more water throughout the day, and people are shocked to see how easy it is.

No. 2 Eat Healthier

One of the worse things a person can do to lose weight is to follow the fad diets. This becomes a never ending cycle.

Fad diets help you to lose a couple of pounds fast, but you pay for it in the end, because you’ll end up starving yourself and that’s not healthy.

Starving yourself makes you gain back the weight quickly, with interest.

Eating healthier is the best way to lose weight, and keep it off.

A. Fresh fruits and vegetables, such as melons, tomatoes and grapes, will not put on any pounds, but satisfy your cravings. They are examples of food with high water content.

B. It might be a little bit pricier to eat the fresh fruit instead of the canned, but the fresh fruits contain much less sugar and more fiber.

c. Fresh vegetables needs to become your friends, since your body loves them. Since most vegetables are highly nutritious and low in calories, they will boost your metabolism. Fresh vegetables will be processed by your body, instead of the factory, a result you can’t get from processed food.

D. Do you have a sweet tooth? You must remember that all processed sugars and corn syrups that you eat goes straight to your fat cells. But, don’t stop eating sweets completely. You will eventually break, and start eating sweets again. Limit your self, and eat less instead.

No 3. Setting Limits

If you eat five smaller meals every day, you will lose more weight. If you want to stay healthy you need to avoid eating large meals once or twice a day or skipping meals. This will not help you lose weight, and it’s unhealthy.

If you eat smaller meals or snack sized meals throughout the day your will keep your hunger under control. Eating smaller meals will also keep your metabolism and digestive system running, and you will burn more calories.

Plan your mini meals, so that they include a little bit of everything. For example, one big bagel is not a real mini meal. A mini meal could contain half a bagel, a slice of cheese, an egg, and a glass of juice. Change your meals by including some healthy options.

Managing Stress at Work

Posted By Rowena French on @ 10:15 am

Before I proceed to tell you how to deal with stress, I want to give you some idea of how people respond to stress. Then I want to introduce you to the idea of negative self-talk – one of the great enemies of stress reduction techniques. My first example is Jane who is failing to cope at work.

Jane is 42 years of age; she has had no previous problems, no previous stress attacks, and no mental health episodes. Lately, she has been very distressed at work and has fears that everyone thinks she’s incompetent. She has become over-sensitive to her leader’s feedback and to the looks of her colleagues. You could say that she is slightly paranoid. The outcome of all of this is that she has become socially phobic. She finds it very difficult to go to parties with her husband. She tends to hide in another room so that she doesn’t have to socialize with people.

Jane is suffering extreme work stress. She has reached the point in her work life where everything is weighing her down. Her physical responses include feeling being physically sick, and even nauseous. She says that she is depressed, reports that she is afraid of making mistakes at work and feels that she cannot cope with work demands.

Jane is not performing well at work. She can’t manage the stress and her system is overloaded. You feel the same way sometimes too? Can you understand her level of stress? Have life’s events overtaken you? Are you constantly tired and mildly depressed? Do people ask what is wrong with you? Are you tired of life? Are you coping well? Has all of this made it much less effective at work?

If the answer is YES!!! – you are suffering extreme stress. And this is a very common phenomenon in today’s high paced society. Some people think that stress is an acceptable bi-product of our busy lifestyle. Research on cardiac disease after the 9/11 attacks showed a significant increase in cardiac ailments. These included high blood pressure, strokes, and heart problems. People’s physical states were impacted by their emotional states. And when people are not well emotionally they have difficulty being highly productive at work.

What are these workplace stressors? That is, what are the events that elevate stress? They include a long list of things.

In the workplace: overload, new load, long hours, pressures and even no ability to control your workplace or your workload. Organizational issues: poor management; lack of leadership; poor communication; political interference; transfers; redundancy. Inter-personal Conflict: your supervisor at work; a work colleague; your partner; your children; your family.

How do we deal with these pressures? Obviously, the solutions depend on you and your context. Changing jobs is a reasonable but not totally effective alternative. If your Boss is causing you problems, why not list his or her name with a ‘headhunter’ and perhaps they’ll get a job somewhere else? From my experience working in Employee Assistance Programs, the major problem is poor role definition. I think I have a specified list of things to do but my role description doesn’t clarify this and my boss has other idea about what I should be doing. Obviously, confronting the issues with the individuals concerned is one simple approach but there are many other ways of resolving this tension, especially if you are committed to taking responsibility for your feelings and actions.

Negative thinking is one of the greatest causes of unresolved workplace stress. Remember that you are what you think and you have to take responsibility for the changes in your life. If you try you can deal with the workplace stress. First you must understand the consequences of negative self talk. Our emotional states are often determined by what we are thinking. We spend a lot of our time with self conversations.

This sounds simple but it’s a fact of life. We create our own problems because we run ourselves down all the time. We probably have 10 times the amount of negative thought to positive thought. We increase our tension and stress by constant self-criticism. The situation is exacerbated if our friends and family constantly criticize us. If we want to manage workplace stress we have to work on becoming more positive about ourselves.

Massage Chair Therapy Enhances Your Golf Swing

Posted By Steve Esquire on @ 10:10 am

Your golf swing is everything to having a good golf game. Your swing involves the coordination of many different muscle groups in tandem. If any of them are off, then so is your swing and the ball will be off the mark. Proper warm up before playing a round helps get your muscles groups working together. This may include stretching, calisthenics and massage therapy. It is vital to get your body prepared properly for the physical activity of swinging your clubs. Massage therapy delivered with a massage chair is an effective way to get your body and muscles loosened up for your next round of golf.

The golf swing actually puts stress on many of parts of the body. The fact that it is repeated throughout the game will build up stress on the lower back, wrists, elbows, shoulders, knees and hips. All of these areas are required to work together to produce a truly accurate swing. If one area like your shoulder has tightness, then it can through your swing off. This is where a sufficient and comprehensive warm up can really help improve your golf game.

The regions that need proper stretching are your shoulders, arms, back, hips and legs. Develop and sustain a stretching routine prior to playing. Make sure you hit all the above listed areas. Calisthenics are another important element to add to your routine. Walking also helps you get your body ready. Using a massage chair to loosen up tight muscles and tendons helps your muscles in addition to stretching.

Massage chairs can provide targeted Swedish and deep tissue massage to these areas. Also the application of heat helps with blood circulation and muscle relaxation. Massage also increases alertness helping concentration during the game. Massage should be performed prior to action, because if inflammation occurs, then there are limited therapies that can reverse it. When getting a pre-game massage remember to obtain adequate hydration.

One of the most common injuries in golf is to the lower back area. The lumbar area takes the brunt of the stress of your swing. It is the critical pivot point as you twist through your swing. To prevent injury in this area, you have to warm up properly. Once you start to have problems, then it is hard to fully recover. You want to stretch the legs, hips, shoulders and back. Using heat in this area also helps to prepare it for activity. Massage therapy is particularly effective to help the lumbar area be loosened up for physical activity.

In order to play golf successfully over the long term, you must take positive steps to avoid injury. What are some of the most common causes of golf injury? They can be over-swinging, twisting during your swing, poor swing mechanics and too little warm up. The golf swing is where most golf injuries occur. If you swing too hard or do not warm up correctly, then you can hurt your back, shoulder, wrist, and other areas. You can reduce this risk by integrating an adequate warm up before your game. However, you must also be aware of your limits and do not over-extend yourself unwisely.

Your golf game can really be improved with massage therapy as part of the warm up. Of course, warming down is also important. If you are playing a few times a week, then it is really important to establish a warm up routine. This way you make sure that all of your muscle groups are adequately prepared for the physical exertion. Most people think of getting a massage when the experience soreness or discomfort. Unfortunately, this is trying to fix the symptom rather than the cause. Massage has many benefits and can help improve your game and your golf attitude. The most convenient and economical way to add massage to your game is with a massage chair recliner. If your swing is on, then life is good. When your swing is off, well then you will need a lot of Mulligans.

Some Reviews On Traveling While Pregnant

Posted By sammy maseko on @ 10:07 am

Travelling by air when you are pregnant requires a little more planning than others. The first thing that needs doing is a consultation with the doctor as there are certain times when it is safer to fly than others apart from any current medical problems. Medical reasons which would prevent a pregnant woman from flying can include, blood loss, raised blood pressure or swelling.

Although it is normally safe for a pregnant woman to travel up to the thirty sixth week or thirty second if it is a multiple birth, individual airlines will differ so a check well before the flight is worthwhile. Some airlines will actually ask a pregnant woman if they have a certificate of pregnancy which is usually advisable after twenty four weeks. Pregnant women should check in early, as they can request a bulkhead seat, which may have more leg room, depending on the airline, or ask for an aisle seat so that it is easier to get in and out.

If an expectant mother is flying to the continents of Asia or Africa she should seek advice on vaccinations for hepatitis A, B and typhoid before traveling. Malaria is another problem and expectant mothers are advised not to travel to countries where contracting it is a possibility.

In Australia, typhoid and hepatitis A vaccinations aren’t advised for children under six but it is recommended that children are up-to-date with their other immunizations. The best advice in these circumstances is for any expectant mother to check with her doctor before she makes plans to travel or fly anywhere.

If in a country with hepatitis A or typhoid then the use of bottled water for drinking or even brushing teeth is an absolute necessity and ice should only be used from water that has been purified. Avoid eating raw vegetables, salad and fruit although thick-skinned fruits such as mandarins, which you peel yourself, or bananas are fine but always wash your hands with soap or antibacterial hand wash before eating. A good accessory to take on a vacation is the new type of fast drying antibacterial hand gels which come in travel pack size and can be slipped into a purse.

Unfortunately, there is an additional risk of blood clots when you are present, one that increases with airline travel so to avoid deep vein thrombosis it is advisable to wear the special socks or stockings you can purchase from drugstores. To keep maintain a good circulation, it is advisable that walking about or other exercises be carried out while in flight whenever possible.

Most travel insurance covers women up until 26 weeks of pregnancy, though this excludes childbirth or the health of a newborn child and although you can still buy standard travel insurance after this point but it doesn’t cover anything related to the pregnancy. Some insurance companies will include travel insurance after the twenty six weeks for pregnant mothers but won’t cover the costs of the birth itself.
